Bet on the Darley Alcibiades Stakes

The Darley Alcibiades Stakes is a Grade 1 race for two-year old fillies each October at Keeneland Race Course. Inaugurated in 1952, the Alcibiades is run on dirt at a mile and one sixteenth with the winner automatically qualifying for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The race carries a purse of $400,000 and was elevated to Grade 1 status in 2007. The Alcibiades was run at seven furlongs until 1981 when it was changed to its current distance. From 2007-2013, the race was run on Polytrack when that surface served as Keeneland’s main track.

Darley Alcibiades Racebooks

Betting a great race like the Darley Alcibiades can be a confusing proposition with the majority of the young fillies attempting to run further than they have in previous races. In choosing an online racebook, horse players can stretch their wagering dollars through rebates and sign-up bonuses not found at the track or OTB.

2016 Darley Alcibiades Contenders

On a dismal opening day at Keeneland, southern California-shipper Gomo acquitted herself nicely over the muddy footing and seemed unfettered by the chill and dampness of the Kentucky weather to romp by 2 3/4 lengths in the 2015 Darley Alcibiades. The Doug O’Neil-trained filly broke alertly and found a comfortable spot on the rail while stalking the pace under jockey Mario Gutierrez in the early going. Around the far turn, there was little doubt as to which animal had the most in reserve as Gutierrez was able to ease off the rail for a three-wide bid on the outside. Gomo kicked away strongly in the stretch to claim the $240,000 winner’s share of the purse and punch her ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Grade 3 Pocahontas victor Dothraki Queen closed nicely to finish second after a troubled trip.

Did you know?

The Darley Alcibiades regularly draws the top two-year-old fillies in the country, using the race as a final stop before the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.   During the Polytrack era at Keeneland, the Alcibiades was also used by some horses as a gateway to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies. 2011 Alcibiades winner Stephanie’s Kitten went on the win the BC Juvenile Turf Fillies the following month at Churchill Downs. Notable past winners of the Alcibiades include multiple grade 1 winner Country Star (2007), three-time Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady (2001), and champion two year-old and three year-old filly Silverbulletday (1998).

Silverbulletday is the only winner of the Alcibiades to also win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. At the present distance of a mile and a sixteenth, 1992 winner Eliza holds the Alcibiades track record stopping the clock in 1:43.20. Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has won the Alcibiades a record six times – the last in 2003 with Be Gentle. Long shot Peace And War won the 2014 Alcibiades which was run on conventional dirt for the first time since 2006. Ironically, Peace And War, running for the first time in the United States, had raced exclusively on turf on synthetic tracks in Europe.
