Bet on the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes

The Spinster Stakes, a Grade 1 race sponsored by breeding powerhouse Juddmonte Farm, is one of the most prestigious races in North America for fillies and mares. Held at Keeneland in October, the mile and an eighth contest is an ideal prep for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and the winner, through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, earns an automatic spot in the starting gate. Since 2006, the race has been contested over the synthetic Polytrack but the racetrack switched back to conventional dirt for the 2014 edition.

Did you Know?

Since the inaugural running of the Juddmonte Spinster in 1956, the race has developed a rich legacy and has played host to some of the best fillies and mares in history. Several stars, including the great Susan’s Girl and Bayakoa, have won the race twice en route to Hall of Fame careers. Both superstar mares were ridden by Laffit Pincay, Jr. and make up four of his five wins in the race.

In 1998, the popular filly Banshee Breeze took on a star-studded field of older rivals for the first time and turned in one of the most visually impressive victories in the race’s storied history, winning by twelve lengths as the favorite. Though she went on to lose the Breeders’ Cup Distaff by a nose, that emphatic win in the Spinster was enough to lock down the Eclipse award for champion three-year-old filly.

In 2004, the brilliant mare Azeri was in the tail-end of her remarkable career. Heralded as one of the best contemporary mares in recent years, the chestnut had lost a step at six-years-old. After an inconsistent year ambitiously campaigned by D. Wayne Lukas, she showed shades of her former self with a three-length victory. Azeri gave Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day his final of five victories in the Spinster.
