$200 K Twilight Derby Appetizing Undercard Race on BC Friday

Category : News - Tue 28/10/2014 - 21:12 EDT

The $200,000 Grade 2 Twilight Derby is the third of four undercard stakes races preceding the four Breeders Cup Friday races October 31 at Santa Anita.

Run at a mile and a quarter on the turf for three year-old colts, the Twilight Derby attracts a field of twelve led by 3/1 morning line favorite Ring Weekend who exits a pair of Grade 3 stakes victories in New York.  Trained by Graham Motion, Ring Weekend has recorded two wins and two second place finishes in four lifetimes starts on the turf.  His last two starts in the Grade 3 Saranac and Grade 3 Hill Prince both resulted in victories at the mile and one eighth distance employing an identical stalk and pounce style.  He will be ridden by John Velazquez who rode the colt to victory in the Saranac.

Talco makes second U.S start for Sadler

Ring Weekend could face a serious challenge from 8/1 outsider Talco who ran third August 31 in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby – his first start for trainer John Sadler after racing in France. With just seven career starts under his belt, Talco is still lightly raced and could benefit from the extra training.  His October 26 workout from six furlongs -1:13 with dogs up - suggests he is doing well and ready to fire.

Always honest Divine Oath hard to knock

Divine Oath (9/2) sandwiched a pair of Grade 3 victories around a sixth place finish in the Grade 1 Secretariat in his last three starts.  The Todd Pletcher trainee has four win in six lifetimes starts on the grass.
