Grade 2 Florida Oaks Offers Interesting Choices

The $250,000 Grade 2 Florida Oaks April 2 at Gulfstream Park features a field of seven three year-old fillies set to go a mile and a sixteenth on the main track in a race with several intriguing possibilities.

Off the Tracks is the 6/5 morning line favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher despite the fact that the talented filly has yet to attempt a two-turn race in her three starts. In those three starts, however, the daughter of Curlin has been nothing short of spectacular winning by open lenghts sprinting, including wins in the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga in July by 3 1/4 lengths before returning in February to win the Margate Stakes at Gulfstream by 4 1/4. Bred to travel longer, Off the Tracks also has Pletcher in her corner, who connects at a 25% clips with  sprint to route horses. Jockey John Velazquez will have the mount breaking from post 7.

Gomo returns in tough spot

Gomo (3/1) won the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades in October, but has not been seen since. The Doug O'Neill trainee's marquee win came over a sloppy track, and faces a very difficult challenge while shipping and coming off a long layoff. Several runners in the field have recorded better Beyer Speed Figures, and handicappers will likely be cautious about taking a short price, but Gomo has shown top-level ability and cannot be discounted.

Romans charge has big upside

Go Maggie Go (6/1) has just a maiden victory to her credit, but could represent plenty of upside. In her lone start, the Dale Romans trainee turned in a professional effort, sitting behind a moderate pace before exploding in the stretch of a 4-length score. A daughter of former Breeders' Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper, Go Maggie Go could improve with more ground.
