On Sunday at Santa Anita, the featured race is the $100,000 Adoration Stakes. Restricted to fillies and mares, the Grade 3 event will be contested at a mile and a sixteenth and has drawn a field of six.
Multiple champion Beholder will be making her seasonal debut and has been tabbed as the overwhelming favorite at odds of 1-9 for trainer Richard Mandella. A six-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes, she won this race last year as part of an undefeated season in which she won five races and defeated male rivals in the Pacific Classic (G1). She earned her third Eclipse Award at the end of the year. Regular rider Gary Stevens will be in the irons and they will break from the outside post.
Sheer Pleasure looking for second straight win
Second choice at morning line odds of 8-1 is Sheer Pleasure for trainer Philip D’Amato. A four-year-old daughter of Birdonthewire, she has been on the board in six of her eleven starts and is a four-time winner. She will be trying to earn the first graded stakes victory of her career and is coming out of a victory in the Dream of Summer Stakes at Santa Anita. Martin Garcia will be aboard and they will break from post position five.
Big class test for All Star Bub
Also in the field at morning line odds of 12-1 is All Star Bub for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. A four-year-old daughter of Midshipman, the chestnut filly has won three of her sixteen starts and will be trying to notch the first black type win of her career. She is stepping up in class and was last seen finishing fourth in an optional claiming race. Rafael Bejarano will be aboard and they are scheduled to break from post position two.
