On Saturday at Fair Grounds, the road to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) will continue with the $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks. Restricted to three-year-old fillies, the Grade 2 event will be run at a mile and a sixteenth and has drawn a field of eight.
Stageplay, one of two fillies in the race for trainer Steve Asmussen, has been installed as the morning line favorite at 5-2 odds. A gray daughter of Curlin, she is a homebred for owner Mike Rutherford and has won three of her five starts. After winning the Silverbulletday Stakes in her first start of the year, she will be trying to rebound after finishing fifth in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds. Florent Geroux will be aboard and they will break from post position four.
Land Over Sea trying to break out of Songbird's shadow
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Land Over Sea for trainer Doug O’Neill. A chestnut daughter of Bellamy Road, she has been on the board in six of her seven starts and will be trying to earn her second victory. She has finished second behind champion Songbird in both of her last starts against graded stakes competition, most recently in the San Ysabel Stakes (G3). John Velazquez will be aboard and they will break from the outside post.
Midnight on Oconee going for first stakes win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 9-2 is Midnight on Oconee for trainer Larry Jones. Bred and owned by Cottonwood Stables, the dark bay daughter of Midnight Lute has won two of her six starts and will be going for her first black type win. She was second in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) last time out and was second behind Stageplay in the Silverbulletday Stakes. James Graham will be in the irons and they are scheduled to break from post position two.
